About Raveled

Unravel the mystery behind the puzzles and scores.

← Back to Game

The puzzles aren't just random; they are intelligently crafted to provide a unique and engaging experience every time you play. Here's a deep dive into how our clever generation process works:

  1. 1 Topical Theme Selection: At the heart of each puzzle is a theme. The system algorithmically selects from a vast, curated database of topics, ranging from historical events and scientific discoveries to pop culture and literature. This ensures a fresh and educational experience.
  2. 2 Knowledge Graph Integration: We leverage a sophisticated knowledge graph to find interconnected concepts related to the chosen theme. This allows us to generate clues and answers that are not just related, but contextually coherent and often surprisingly clever. Even the same theme will yield different puzzles on different days.
  3. 3 Timely & Relevant Themes: On special days, the puzzle generation system incorporates themes related to the current season, holidays, or significant world events, making your daily puzzle feel connected and current.
  4. 4 Difficulty Ramp: The five daily puzzles are intentionally ordered with a gentle difficulty curve. The first few puzzles use more common words related to the theme, building up to a more challenging final puzzle to test the deepest knowledge of the day's topic. Additionally, the clues are written to be progressively more obvious as you use up your reveals. Abstract/vague clues for the first few reveals, then more direct clues the more you use up.

Your score is a reflection of your skill, speed, and strategy. We've designed a weighted system to reward thoughtful play.

  • Base Score: Each correctly solved puzzle grants a base number of points (1,000).
  • Time Penalty: A timer starts with each new puzzle. The longer you take, the more points are deducted from your score. However, time is not weighted heavily, so it's better to think than to rush.
  • Hint Penalty: Revealing a clue (up to 6 available) or a letter will help when you're stuck, but it will apply a small deduction from your potential score for that puzzle. The number of letter reveals available depends on the word's length (you can reveal letters until only two are left). Clues deduct significantly fewer points, so use them more than letters for a higher score.
  • Hard Mode: Feeling brave? Enable Hard Mode in Settings to remove the free first clue and the free letter reveal that normal mode provides. Every clue and every letter costs points from the start, with a higher ceiling for those who want a pure challenge.
  • Ranked Tiers: Each tier is color coded per round each day. You'll notice these colors used when sharing your score, after you complete a puzzle on your daily summary, and in the score history calendar to indicate your performance that day. The tiers are as follows:

    Total for the Day
    (all 5 puzzles):

    🟥 <1,000
    🟪 1,000 -1,999
    🟦 2,000 - 3,999
    🟩 4,000+

    Total per Puzzle:

    🟥 0 - 249
    🟪 250 - 499
    🟦 500 - 749
    🟩 750+

Solving a puzzle with no reveals and quickly is your best bet, but when that fails, here are some point-saving tips:

  • Reveals: Reveal Clues before Letters. You can reveal all 6 clues at the same cost as a letter reveal (-150 points). Letter reveals should be a last resort.
  • Time: Don't worry too much about the timer. 1 minute off the timer is about the same deduction (-180 points) as a letter reveal (-150 points).
  • Solving: Each puzzle solved gives you +50 points. So even if you take a bit longer, it's better to finish than to skip. Remember, losing points to time is capped after 2 minutes, so 1 hour or 2 minutes is the same penalty.
  • Bonus: Every day you'll see ⭐ icon on your screen while playing. This will reveal the first letter of one of the puzzles once a day. Use it if you get really stuck or if you're feeling lucky. There are no point deductions for using it.

Example Scenarios

Here is a look at a single puzzle (you get 5 day in each set) and how two different players scored:

Player 1

Solved in 5:30 with 1 clue reveal and 1 letter reveal.

  • Base Score: 1000
  • Time Penalty: -360
  • Clue Reveal Penalty: -25
  • Letter Reveal Penalty: -150

Total Score: 465

Once the timer reaches 2:00, there is no further time penalty. The max time penalty (-360 points) is roughly equivalent to revealing 2-3 letters.

Player 2

Solved in :30 with 0 clue reveals and 3 letter reveals.

  • Base Score: 1000
  • Time Penalty: -90
  • Clue Reveal Penalty: 0
  • Letter Reveal Penalty: -450

Total Score: 460

This player finished the puzzle very quickly, but used 3 letter reveals.

Results: Player 1 received a higher score even though they took more than 5 minutes to solve this one puzzle. In general it's better to take much more time than to use letter reveals for a high score.
